June 11 Strawberry Flowers
June 11 Strawberry Flowers
Hi all,

As everyone has noticed, the weather this whole spring has been absolutely unacceptable. Jeremy and I pooled together some money and offered it to the sun to come out for just a little bit, but we were soundly rejected.

We had rain on 22 of 31 days in May, and now 6 of 11 days in June. Temperatures have been below normal, and the sun has been out only long enough to keep the grass and dandelions growing. While this makes for miserable humans, eager for sunshine and warmth after a long winter, it also makes for miserable plants. We can irrigate our fields when we have drought, we can amend the soils to help it drain heavy rains more easily, and we can add fertilizer to help the plants flourish, but there is simply no substitute for the sun.

The good news is that we have been able to keep up on planting, and everything is now in the ground that should be. We can still have a great year, as long as we get some sunshine during the next few months.

Because of the poor growing conditions, we do need to push back our first Thursday delivery. It will now be on June 27th (two weeks from Thursday) for those picking up in Waconia, Victoria, Chaska, and Chanhassen. For now, we are still optimistic on keeping our first Tuesday delivery for June 25th (two weeks from today) for those picking up in Excelsior, Minnetonka, Minneapolis, and St. Paul.

We are still excited about this season–especially since the weather can’t get much worse! We can’t wait to start feeding your family for this summer. I will follow up next week with instructions for your delivery site, and in the meantime you can think of how happy your broccoli plants are every time you see the sun.

Thank you all for your understanding, and we hope you enjoy the season!

-Red, Nina, Nathan, and Jeremy
